Sunshine, Team Spirit, and a Brilliant Day of Racing at York – Wakefield Juniors Celebrate Duathlon Success
Wakefield Juniors Celebrate Duathlon Success

York Sport Village – 10th May 2025

The Wakefield Junior Triathlon Club brought incredible energy, enthusiasm, and determination to the York Duathlon, a key fixture in association with British Triathlon.

Hosted at the excellent York Sport Village, the event saw over 115 young athletes competing from clubs across the region – a fantastic turnout and a clear sign that junior triathlon is regaining momentum post-COVID. While we’re not quite back to the record-breaking numbers seen before the pandemic, the steady growth is hugely encouraging.

Wakefield Juniors turned out in force, with 34 entries — one of our biggest team showings in recent years. The atmosphere was electric from the first race to the final finish line, and the smiles, support, and sense of achievement were what truly made the day special.

And it wasn’t just about taking part — our young athletes raced their hearts out, earning seven podium finishes and showcasing real resilience, skill, and sportsmanship. From first-timers to seasoned competitors, every performance was a proud moment for the club.

Behind the scenes, the event came together thanks to a huge collective effort. Club volunteers handled everything from early-morning setup and registration to medal distribution, marshalling, mechanical support, and first aid. Some even stepped in to fix potholes, tape routes, and fill water bottles — all while offering smiles, encouragement, and sun cream.

This duathlon marked the culmination of months of planning by our dedicated club coordinators, who began preparing back in November. Their commitment paid off, with the event running smoothly and safely, all while giving our young triathletes a brilliant race-day experience.

There were last-minute entries, heroic bike fixes, van dramas resolved by cool-headed teamwork, and even a few comedy moments at the start line. It was a true community effort, and every helping hand — from parents and grandparents to siblings and coaches — played a vital role.

As the sun beamed down and medals clinked around necks, the mood was unmistakably upbeat. Wakefield Juniors once again showed why they’re such a passionate and thriving club, and why events like these matter so much to the development and confidence of young athletes.

Here’s to the continued growth of junior triathlon, to more podiums, and to more days like this one. Next stop: triathlon season!
