FAQs (frequently asked questions)
What age can my child compete in a Triathlon or Duathlon event?
Children can start competing in British Triathlon–sanctioned events from the age of 8 years old (TriStar Start category). From there, they progress through the TriStar age groups (TriStar 1–3) and into Youth categories, with distances carefully matched to each age group to ensure races are safe, fun, and appropriate.
Younger children in the year of their 7th Birthday are very welcome to join our club for training and fun sessions, but they won’t be eligible for official triathlon or duathlon events until they reach the TriStar Start age group.
Age categories are based on your child’s age on 31 December of the competition year, not their birthday. This keeps things fair and consistent across the season.
TriStar Start: 8 years old
TriStar 1: 9–10 years
TriStar 2: 11–12 years
TriStar 3: 13–14 years
Youth (Category A): 15–16 years
Junior (Categories B & C): 17–19 years
Simply check their age as of 31 December that year. For example, if your child turns 9 at any point during the year, they’ll race in TriStar 1 all season.
Yes — children will need to bring their own bike and helmet to take part, along with the right clothing and basic equipment. Safety is key, so the bike must be in good working order and the helmet correctly fitted.
We also recommend bringing:
- Lightweight, fitted clothing suitable for sport
- Trainers for running (or cycling shoes/cleats if they use them)
- Goggles and a towel for swimming
- A water bottle to stay hydrated
- A race belt (this makes it easy to switch your child’s race number between disciplines — worn on the back for cycling, then rotated to the front for running)
This kit helps ensure your child is comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy their event.
